The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given a green signal to the 'Professor of Practice' proposal. Under this, Universities and Higher Education Institutions will soon be able to recruit faculty members under a new category.
Candidates recruited under this category will not have to comply with the academic qualification and publication requirements.
A decision in this regard was taken by the UGC in its 560th meeting held last week. It is believed that the 'Professor of Practice' scheme will be notified next month.
If the whole matter is understood in easy language, then now the candidates will be able to be appointed on the posts of professors in universities and colleges even without an academic degree. Candidates will get a chance to become a professor without NET exam and PhD.
The candidates to be appointed to the posts of Professor will be experts in their respective fields. The draft plan approved by the UGC suggests that experts from engineering, science, media, literature, entrepreneurs, social sciences, fine arts, civil services and armed forces will be able to become professors under this category.
What will be the eligibility criteria?
Under the 'Professor of Practice' scheme, 'persons who have proven expertise in their profession or have at least 15 years of service or experience, preferably at the senior level... will be eligible for the Professor of Practice category.
If they have excellent professional experience or work, then formal academic qualification will not be mandatory for this.
Under this scheme, these experts will be exempted from prescribed publication and other eligibility criteria for appointment as faculty members at the professor level.
Only so many people will be recruited in one institute
As per the UGC guidelines, the required skills will be required for the candidates to fulfill the duties and responsibilities. This scheme is likely to be implemented from the coming academic year.
The Commission has decided that the number of Professors of Practice in Higher Education Institutions shall not exceed 10 per cent of the sanctioned posts. Under this scheme, the faculty members will be divided into three categories.
Among them, the first category would be for professors of practice funded by industries, the second category would be for posts funded by higher education institutions from their own resources and the third category would be for appointments on honorary basis.
